Calcium Deficiency in Cannabis: Symptoms, Causes and Remedies
Calcium is vital for cannabis plants, helping form sturdy cell walls, vigorous roots and strong stems. When calcium is lacking, growth can decline quickly. If you want to spot the issue early, read our guide to early calcium deficiency in cannabis.

Signs to Look For
Because calcium doesn’t move readily through the plant, symptoms typically appear on recent growth first:
- Small brown or rust-coloured spots on leaves
- New leaves that are curled, twisted or distorted
- Stems that are weak and brittle
- Slow growth with underdeveloped buds
Common Causes
In many cases the issue isn’t an absolute shortage of calcium but the plant’s inability to take it up. The usual causes include:
- Incorrect pH: Maintain soil at 6.0–7.0 and hydro at 5.5–6.5.
- Soft or RO water: This water contains little or no calcium.
- Nutrient imbalance: Excess potassium or magnesium can block calcium uptake.
- Overwatering: Damages roots and reduces absorption.
How to Fix It
Begin by testing and correcting your pH. Then add a Cal-Mag supplement, or incorporate dolomite lime into the soil for a slow-release calcium source. If you suspect nutrient buildup, flush the medium with pH-balanced water. Damaged leaves won’t recover, but healthy new growth should appear within a week or two.
